Apple may introduce Dr. Dre and Jimmy Iovine as high-level executives at its Worldwide Developers’ Conference next month. A Billboard report, which cites the proverbial people in the know, claims that Iovine would likely oversee Apple’s digital music strategy and handle relationships with labels and publishers. If confirmed, Iovine will take the reins from current SVP Eddy Cue, who has been instrumental in building the iTunes Store in 2003.
Although the iTunes Store is the largest digital store in the U.S. and accounts for over 70 percent of all song and album downloads, there has been a sharp decline of download sales in the first quarter of 2014. Flagging download sales and increasing usage of streaming services like Spotify are said to be major motivators behind Apple’s acquisition of Beats as the manufacturer looks to get into the subscription music segment.
Although neither company has officially confirmed the deal, Apple is set to acquire Beats for $3.2 billion, which would make the acquisition its largest to date. The Financial Times originally stated that the deal could on the cards as early as this week, but the acquisition itself might take two months to finalize. As such, there is a high likelihood that Apple would look to wait until the acquisition is complete before it officially reveals Dr. Dre and Jimmy Iovine as executives.
